Invention of Solitude

Repainting Caspar David Friedrich’s, Das Eismeer, (1823–1824). One of my all-time favourite paintings, not the least for its memorable, sublime and dramatic composition. So many of the war press photographs we see these days from bombed sites in Gaza have the exact same composition, (chosen by skilled eyes of its photographers), let alone its horrendous content. The rubble in the press pics is not far from being identical with the sea ice rubble in Friedrich’s painting, though one is fictional, the other not.
